August – friend or foe?

You, the innocent consumer, must always remember that fashion is not just about pretty clothes bought with pretty pennies…FASHION IS A BUSINESS. You might be airing the underside of your bum cheeks in denim shorts or wearing a slinky little top in August, but in fashion circles, August is autumn. It’s a funny thing, most of us are just about getting comfortable enough to show off some skin and hey presto, we go to a clothes shop to buy a few more bits and there are already rows of faux fur, chunky knits and luxurious coats. This year, we have been totally spoiled rotten and totally sunkissed by the most fantabulous weather. It has given us all such a lift, I don’t think that I have ever seen so many happy faces!

While some women wander aimlessly through shops, randomly picking up sale pieces, the clever shopper always goes with a plan and a clear vision of what is missing from their wardrobe, what needs to be replaced or which colour will add umph to a few key pieces. You have a wedding next June, you know that you will definitely get an invite, so if your weight doesn’t normally fluctuate, you can save a small fortune if you look for a dress in the sales. Might I suggest that you don’t choose a colour that was ‘everywhere’ this year…in other words, it could look very much the ‘has been’ in ten or so months time. A solid colour or maybe two block colours is far less recognisable as the ‘one on the sale rack’ than a dress with a bold pattern. Always and ever choose style over fashion – a classic cut will win every time. I have been lucky on more than one occasion and ended up with an incredible label and impeccable quality at a fraction of the cost. Even if you don’t have an event to wear a special dress to but the dress fits like a glove…buy it! A great dress can be worn many times and will flatter you every single time – however, a dress that you settle for will most likely only be worn that one time. You know what I’m talking about, when you just don’t feel completely right but you wear it anyway, spend the day or night feeling uncomfortable, pulling at yourself, avoiding the mirror in the bathroom and at the end of the night, you rip it off and wonder what’s the point in even dry cleaning it because it most certainly will not be intimate with your body again! So, if you find a dress that is your kind of dress, BUY IT and oh what a bonus when you get it at sale price.

You are either a wedge girl or you are not. If you are, then don’t give a toss about whether they will be in style or not next summer, if you are lucky enough to find a great pair in the sales, snap them up. You simply cannot go wrong with a tan leather pair of wedges – they complement just about anything and work with any colour. Wedges are a wonderful confidence boost for any one who desperately yearns for a few more inches. I know so many women who genuinely feel that those few inches are the difference between looking ok and looking fantastic. I do believe that they are 100 per cent right! If there is such a thing as a ‘flip-flop addict’, then, hands up, I’m definitely one. I have boxes of them, every colour, every shade of every colour and I’m not talking about the plastic ones, I mean nice leather ones. Even my boys knew to buy me a pair when they were on holidays; a gorgeous gold pair and I adore them. So, flip-flops are always a great sale buy and if you are too shy to expose very much skin during the summer months, bare your toes, there is nothing as refreshing, and paint your toe nails a glorious shade to complement them.

For some reason, unbeknownst to me, underwear sales in August are incredible. When you think about it, it doesn’t make sense why underwear would ever go on sale…there isn’t much of a difference between my summer underwear wardrobe and my winter underwear wardrobe. It’s not like I have warmer bits for the colder months, you can wear any colour at any time of the year…as long as it makes you feel fantastic. I have been clever lucky enough to invest in every piece of underwear on the market by Hot Knickers. All I can say to you if you haven’t is YOU ARE SERIOUSLY MISSING OUT! Might I add that so is your significant other. A great pair of knickers will give you as much confidence as great hair and don’t you ever doubt that! Have you ever just emptied your entire underwear drawer, thrown almost everything away, treated yourself to some amazing new bits and pieces? No? Try it some time – it’s a total buzz.

I just invested in a classic cut black jumpsuit; well actually I invested 60 per cent less than the original price. I don’t particularly have anywhere in mind to wear it to but I’m sure that I will find somewhere. It’s class, it’s black, it fits, therefore it’s a winner and a certain cut jumpsuit will ALWAYS be in style…and I only just got it, so I’m sure that August will be kind to everyone and have many such wonderful offerings at a great price. Keeping my wobbly bits firmly in place (it is becoming more of a struggle but I just laugh at it), my daughter (who has NO wobbly bits at all – I can’t even remember back that far) and I fit into the same dress size, so I treated her to an Amal Clooney sunflower yellow designer dress for her graduation. I can’t wait to see it on her; it fit me but yellow doesn’t do very much if you are blonde – yellow on a brunette is a whole different matter entirely…and yes…the price I paid…let’s just say that it most definitely was NOT the price intended at the start of the season. It’s a definite keeper, a classic cut, fitted, satin and a gorgeous length. There is nothing special about me and my buying power, those bits and pieces are out there for you too. Despite the fact that August can be a funny old month, I do believe that it is a dear friend but a friend that you have to work for, and it is so very worth it. For those of you thinking about the end of the month, the back to school scenarios, the pandemonium, there is also Electric Picnic, the last blast of good music for the summer. A trip that I love, rejuvenating to put it mildly. Although I have been known to need a week to recover. The style, oh the style, it puts my head into a spin. Life is short, take every opportunity to dress up, get out, listen to good music, sleep under the stars, even if it does take you a week to recover!
