While you don’t have to dress up to visit Clonakilty’s newest and trendiest spot, Choono’s Bar and Restaurant on Pearse Street is most definitely a ‘classy joint’. Previously a nightclub, the large space has been carefully renovated to create a welcoming ambience. Natural stone, dark wood, warm lighting and a fireplace with a traditional stove all combine to create a cozy and intimate space; it’s the type of place where time can easily be forgotten. With comfortable seating areas and plenty of standing room, Choono’s is a great spot for a Saturday night on the town or simply to meet up with family or friends.
The back room restaurant at Choono’s can seat up to 80 people comfortably and can also be used as a function room, perfect for work groups, small weddings, christenings, communions or indeed any small group.
Choono’s is a family run business and the three owners are familiar faces in Clonakilty. Margaret O’Donovan and her son Shane previously ran the busy Bernie’s Bar in the town for a number of years before taking over The Lifeboat Inn in Courtmacsherry. Anat Mergi O’Donovan, Shane’s wife, has joined them in this venture and has many years experience working in the hotel and restaurant trade.
With a small but experienced team behind them, their vision is to produce quality food and professional yet friendly service in a warm and cosy atmosphere.
A proficient front-of-house staff means that customers can enjoy a friendly and efficient service. A skilled kitchen staff boasting experienced chefs Alan Flynn and Pawel Kowalski ensures that quality ingredients are handpicked, mostly coming from local suppliers, including fish from Rosscarbery, meats from MJ O’Neill’s and brown pudding from Timoleague. Other suppliers include Shannonvale foods and Ummera Smoked Products. The menu will change frequently reflecting the seasonal produce. All food is cooked to order so can be tailored to meet special dietary requirements such as gluten-free. There is also gluten-free bread available. Originally from the Middle East, Anat does not eat meat, so needless to say there is plenty of variety for vegetarians on the menu.
The menu has also been priced very reasonably with a Sirloin steak costing €20 and a fillet for €24.00. Fish and chips will set you back just €13. A glass of house wine is priced at €5 or you could go for a bottle of house wine for €17.
The bar offers an extensive coffee menu ranging from your regular Americano to the more indulgent ‘Mickey Mouse’, a flavoured coffee served with vanilla icecream instead of milk.
Cocktails are also served. So, why not enjoy a girl’s night out and dress for the occasion!
Choono’s is also very family friendly with plenty of space, a changing unit and highchairs. There is also a healthy and tasty kids menu.
Anyone interested in holding a function or wedding at Choono’s is welcome to meet with the chef to create a menu customised to suit taste and budget. “We want to create a beautiful experience for people,” explains Anat. “Somewhere people can relax and feel comfortable.”
Choono’s Monday Night Club is coming soon and will offer a place for staff to unwind with entertainment, dinner and drinks after a busy work weekend.
Choono’s serves lunch and dinner and is open from Thursday to Monday, from 12pm till late.
