Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 takes place from February 29 to March 13 and once again the Clonakilty Fairtrade committee is working on a programme of events to highlight FT in the community. Clonakilty became Ireland’s first Fairtrade town in 2003, and every year since has celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight.

At a recent committee meeting a number of projects were proposed and members agreed to work on them.

Among them are:

To contact local schools who are not already FT Schools to encourage them to try to get this official recognition, by adopting five simple steps (see

To apply to the National Fairtrade office in Dublin and request that a Fairtrade grower visiting Ireland visits Clonakilty and speaks to one or more schools.

To organise a ‘Fairtrade Street Quiz’ in which children would answer a series of questions based on clues posted up on windows of businesses in town who stock/serve Fairtrade products.

To organise an open day on Thursday, March 10 at the Clonakilty Chocolate Factory, founded by committee member Allison Roberts and see how her Fairtrade chocolate is made from-the-bean! Free but booking essential as numbers will be limited. Ring 085-7574338 ASAP.

Saturday, March 12 from 12 to 3pm – Fairtrade Cultural Brunch at O’Donovan’s Hotel back garden. Pot-luck style – bring a dish to share showcasing a Fairtrade ingredient (bananas, chocolate, nuts, spices!). Prize for the best dish!  Don’t forget to bring a plate and fork to try everything on offer!  All welcome!

Visit by Clonakilty Fairtrade member to speak to local schools (if requested).

Prize for the 1,000 person to ‘like’ the Clonakilty Fairtrade Facebook page.

Not all events are finalised so please check the Clonakilty Fairtrade Facebook page regularly for updates.
