Eight year-old Conor O’Donovan was the outright winner of the ‘Selfie’ competition organised by Clonakilty Fairtrade Committee, as part of the recent National Fairtrade Fortnight. Throughout the fortnight, people in the Clonakilty area were invited to take ‘Selfie’ photos of themselves holding a Fairtrade product and posting it on the Clonakilty Fairtrade Facebook page, stating the local business where they purchased it.

Conor was one of many entrants and posted a picture of himself holding a bar of Cadbury’s FT Chocolate that his Mum Viola had bought for him at White’s Texaco Service Station. During the FT Fortnight the picture clocked up 63 ‘Likes’ – way ahead of all other entries. He was presented with his €100 hamper made up entirely of FT products last week by the Clonakilty FT Committee.

In congratulating Conor, chairperson Trevor Kingston, thanked all who had entered the Selfie Competition, saying it had attracted a lot of entries among young people and that the Clonakilty Fairtrade Facebook page was now an important medium in raising awareness about Fairtrade in Clonakilty and wider afield. He hopes that this will encourage people locally to continue to support Fairtrade in Clonakilty – the country’s first FT Town, which in turn guarantees fair prices to Third World producers. He also thanked the local businesses who continue to stock Fairtrade items and the consumers locallywho purchase them.
