Local secondary school student Katelyn Crowley from Bandon Grammer School, Bandon has been named as a finalist in the Fine Dine at Mine All-Island Schools Cookery Competition 2014.

Each finalist in the competition has been paired up with a local chef who will mentor the students on their dish, flavours and presentation in advance of the final cook-off on May 6 and 7 in St. Angela’s College, Sligo.

Katelyn Crowley is paired up with The Poachers Inn in Bandon.

The competition provides secondary school students with an opportunity to work with professionals and learn the tricks of the trade. The local chefs mentoring the students also provide them with an opportunity to cook and eat the best quality food produced in their local areas.

President of the Restaurants Association of Ireland and owner/ chef of Gallagher’s Boxty House in Dublin, Pádraic Óg Gallagher has great pride in supporting the initiative:

“Educating the youth of Ireland on cookery as a career and not just a pastime has become an important focus of the Restaurants Association of Ireland. Not only that, but this competition aims to promote healthy eating through the creation of lower cost and healthier option meals in conjunction with their local restaurants.”

The competition gives students an opportunity to create tasty, healthy and affordable restaurant meals at home. Students were asked to submit their favourite restaurant meal (main course dish only) for two people. Over 1,400 applications were received from all over the country and are now narrowed down to the last 32 (16 junior cycle and 16 senior cycle).

Amanda McCloat, Head of the Home Economics Department in St. Angela’s College commented, “This competition aims to encourage students to display their culinary capabilities while also promoting the importance of healthy eating and giving due cognisance to budgetary requirements. We are delighted to allow students the opportunity to showcase their talents once again this year.”
