Anusha’s Restaurant at Bandon Golf Club is one of those hidden away gems that once you find it, although you kind of want to keep it all to yourself, you can’t help but to share the treasure!
Chris Gopaul and his wife Anusha started the restaurant last October but have been busy fine-tuning menus before officially announcing that the restaurant is open, not just to club members, but also to the public.
Overlooking the scenic golf course, with smooth jazz playing softly in the background, it’s a quiet haven just outside Bandon town. And if the interior feels just a little on the clubhouse side, the superb food and relaxed atmosphere more than compensate. It’s the perfect space for an occasion or family outing.
An award-winning chef, Chris started his culinary career at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links, one of Ireland’s most prestigious hotels, climbing the career ladder and going on to become Professional Head Chef at Slattery’s in Dublin.
“At a very young age, I was very passionate about good food and very often, I would cook for my family. I grew up in a family involved in the food industry with my parents who ran a catering company supplying Indian sweets and Mauritian delicacies for weddings, functions and celebrations,” says Chris.
“It has not been easy, as I faced many challenges and also, the job of a chef involves long working hours, daily focus. No matter what situation I faced in my personal life, I had to maintain standards, discipline, organisation and show perfection in my work.”
Chris’ hard work paid off and in 2015 he won the Chef of the Year award in Ireland.
At Anusha’s, Chris is combining local and seasonal ingredients to create simple but innovative menus. Artisan ingredients are combined with passion and skill but without pretention. ‘We serve what we like to eat ourselves,” say Chris and Anusha, who have three children. “It’s very important to us that this is a family restaurant and that children are accommodated too.”
Popular items on the lunch menu include a Classic Omelette made with fluffy freerange eggs; the Club Roll with grilled bacon, Clonakilty sausages, freerange egg and mixed lettuce served in a ciabatta roll with hand cut chips; or the Greensome Sandwich made with poached chicken, fresh avocado, watercress, lemon aioli and served with hand cut chips and a choice of bread.
Dinner options include a Catch of the Day, Chicken Curry and Golf Club Burger. “I love cooking fish,” says Chris “and in West Cork I have a choice of the best.”
Vegetarians are also catered for and ninety per cent of dishes on the menu are gluten-free.
The restaurant, café and bar is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Large groups of up to 70 are catered for. Sunday lunch is served from 12-5pm and there is also an artisan pizza menu.
