If you are visiting Castletownbere, or are lucky enough to be a local, make it your business this summer to pop into Taste, located at Bank Place, to sample the shop’s fantastic range of savoury and sweet treats, organic wines or artisan cheeses.

Sheila Power and Kevin O’Sullivan took over Taste, a wholefood store and deli, in 2008 and the shop has recently relocated four doors up, still at Bank Place, where they now have a lovely outside seating area, which catches the sun.

With shelves full of wholefoods, natural beauty products and supplements, the couple also focus on providing a feast of delicious flavours, with as many as possible from Cork. “Our ethos is to support and promote local where at all possible,” says Kevin.

Taste stocks Milleen’s cheese, Irish Atlantic Sea Salt and Lorge’s Chocolate – all from the Beara peninsula – whilst from the wider Cork area they have Old Millbank Smoked Salmon, Woodside Farm Bacon Products, Joe’s Farm crisps and artisan breads from Arbutus bakery.

Taste do make an exception in their ‘local food first’ policy for particularly good artisan products such as French and Italian cheeses, salamis and organically produced wines, many of which are from Sardinia and Italy.

Taste welcomes a steady flow of customers from morning to evening. Bright and early are the gourmet coffee lovers, grabbing take-out coffee made from freshly ground beans, accompanied by a flapjack, muffin, jim-jam or cookie – all of which are prepared from scratch in-house.

Taste’s coffee beans are supplied by Cork Coffee Roasters, a company that specialises in small batch roasting on traditional machines, using methods honed over the centuries. The owner of Cork Coffee Roasters, John Gowen, is originally from Castletownbere, keeping a very local connection that Sheila and Kevin value.

For lunch, Taste’s deli really comes into it own with sandwiches, wraps, salads and more, whilst the afternoon sees a rush of people grabbing a bottle of organic wine, a savoury bake such as quiche, or ingredients for dinner.

Discover this Beara gem for yourself. Taste is open Monday to Saturday and you can contact them on 027 71943 or just call in!
