Popular café Betty Brosnan’s in Clonakilty will soon have a new tantilising aroma to tempt chocolate lovers inside. Established in 1923, the historic café on Clonakilty’s main street will make new history this December, as the Clonakilty Cocoa Company gets its chocolate making production line off the ground in the purpose built upstairs chocolate factory at Betty’s.

Clonakilty’s very own ‘Willy Wonka’, proprietor and chocolate lover Steve Clery is passionate about creating a product that will not only taste great, but is something different to what’s already out there. “I’m very excited about delivering a bar in the shops that’s both Irish and a quality product,” says Steve.

After reaching the final four in Clon’trepreneur 2013 — a competition that was initiated to attract forward-thinking innovators with ideas to stimulate business and create jobs — Steve decided to forge ahead with his chocolate making initiative. He spent the next year researching the market, speaking to experts and finetuning the recipe for his 50g bars of chocolate. With a spoonful of passion thrown in to the chocolate mix, Steve has succeeded in creating a recipe for success that has already attracted international interest.

The Clonakilty Cocoa Co sources its milk chocolate from Ghana and dark chocolate from South America.

Also an athlete, Steve is very interested in the health benefits of cocoa, stemming from the antioxidant flavonoids. Cocoa is one of the best ‘super foods’ available. In short, the more cocoa solids a chocolate product contains, the better the health benefits. (for example the milk chocolate bar produced by The Clonakilty Cocoa Company has a cocoa content of 43 pc and the dark has a cocoa content of 70 pc)

The Clonakilty Cocoa Co 50g chocolate bars will be on sale in Betty’s and local shops in December, just in time to post off to family and friends living abroad for Christmas.
