During the first few days of December we discover if the comet ISON has reappeared after its journey around the Sun on November 28. It became visible to the naked eye before dawn in late November in the first degrees of Scorpio. It travels through to the first degrees of Sagittarius at perihelion, when it’s nearest to the Sun. If the comet survives we should get to view it in the early morning sky around sunrise. Ancient Astrologers have traditionally understood comets to be signs of change and portents of forthcoming disruption. The renowned second century astrologer, Ptolomy, wrote in his astrological treatise, Tetrabiblos, that comets “produce the effects, peculiar to Mars and to Mercury – wars, hot weather, disturbed conditions, and the accompaniments of these.”  Whilst the movements of our planets are predictable and we can use the same calculations centuries into the past and future, a comet is an unpredictable ‘wild card’. It is chaos amongst the order and can be considered as a deviation from the usual patterns. With the appearance of a bright comet comes the disruptive force of the unexpected. This ‘game changer’ does not have to be something dreadful though, there is the possibility that it could all turn out very well, once the chaos is over!

On December 7, Mars enters the cardinal sign of Libra, which adds to the building energy of the grand Cardinal square, which becomes exact next April. It’s then that the ongoing challenging aspects bring all the background tensions to the surface so we can really see what we are dealing with.

On December 21, the Sun enters Capricorn marking the Winter Solstice point. From now, the days begin to lengthen once more. When a planet enters a new sign we call it an Ingress and these are particularly potent moments, which set a trend for the next weeks or months. Venus starts her apparent retrograde motion on the Solstice day, turning forward once more on January 31. The effect of her ‘backwards’ motion will be felt right into mid March. Starting an important new relationship during her retrograde should be treated with caution. Whilst outward appearances are attractive during a Venus retrograde phase we need to attend to the true inner value of people, possessions, financial investments and anything else that we might desire. Reflecting on what is of genuine worth will be of great benefit whereas making deals, agreements, purchases or partnerships now might turn out to have been based purely on our desire rather than any actual core value.

The morning of December 25 could be volatile, as fiesty Mars makes a direct opposition to freedom seeking Uranus. This is a potential flashpoint and any sudden upsurge may instigate endings, new beginnings or a complete redirection of energy. The impulse to get under the surface of a situation, attitude or issue is heightened by Mars making a provocative angle to Pluto on December 31. This could see the year going out with a bang, as any attempt to keep things under control could prove futile.

The next New Moon is at 11° Sagittarius on December 3 at 00:23am and the next Full Moon is at 26° Gemini on December 17 at 9:28am.

Aries: This New Moon is good for deep thinking and it’s time to take a turn toward more lasting values. Right now, you can expect encouragement regarding all things candid and honest. Concentrate on essentials and focus on the essence of your situation. ‘Take care of business’ is the key to present action. A lack of superficiality finds you straight to the point, interested in the truth of things. Perhaps a rekindling of personal philosophical and religious thoughts is required also. The foundations of belief you lay down now are there to be built on in the future.

Taurus: Now is a time for stripping away and discarding non-essentials or memories of things past. During this New Moon you can separate the wheat from the chaff, concentrating on important things. You are unsentimental about all of this. The situation you are in manages to support some mental or physical housecleaning on your part. There is no place in your life for outworn or flimsy goods, ideas or relationships. Innovations, new and possibly unconventional approaches to being productive or making money are in order. Your response to life becomes more original and innovative.

Gemini: Perhaps this New Moon will be a very social time, during which you receive all kinds of support from those around you. You may neglect individual concerns in favour of group or social affairs. Relationships are nourished and very much in focus. This is a time for turning away from your personal experiences by responding in a more spiritual and socially minded manner. You can handle your own past, and you want to share, especially by relating to others or in community work. You are able to love and care both for yourself and others.

Cancer: Efforts on your part to improve your health, diet, and physical condition win support from others. You are encouraged to attend to nagging details, to get them out of the way during the New Moon. This is a time of discrimination and possible self-examination. Sort through the experiences of the last several months, separate the worthwhile from the worthless and, in general, salvage what you can. An inner drive may find you out and about and enjoying the social scene. You may be urged to adopt a more open or impersonal attitude toward yourself or others. Expect important relationships to take up more of your attention now.

Leo: The trend for you this New Moon is to be more creative and expressive. Others may urge you on toward a more self-confident and outgoing attitude. Enjoy the sense of having lived and experienced something with perhaps the dawning of an awareness of who you are and what you have been through these last months. Together with a growing sense of self-discovery you may find yourself very appreciative of your more imaginative qualities. You love and value confidence and expression from the heart: real life drama. Soon your mind will turn towards matters that need deep reflection as you take stock of your current situation.

Virgo: This New Moon your home and private life could be very rewarding for you. Your feelings and sense of security prompt you to seek seclusion or lose yourself in past memories. This marks the end of a phase of uncertainty and feeling your way. Now you can secure your position, know what limits there are, and move forward. You have sent down roots and have a base to build on. This is a creative time for you regarding ideas, concepts, and expressing or communicating yourself. You can put your experience and feelings into words and may be at your most witty and dramatic.

Libra: Your ability to communicate in general is enhanced as you find the needed support or backing from those around you during this New Moon. Your ideas and thoughts may be very deep and rich, memories are especially vivid. You are exploring and searching now, looking for meaning, linking things together, following up connections, seeing where the ends meet or fall short. You may come full circle with a feeling of being on your own again. If so, then consider what aspects of your past you would like to put behind you and then begin to rebuild those connections again.

Scorpio: You may receive special attention from the people around you over this New Moon. Younger people, women especially and your home environment may contribute somehow to improve your financial standings. You have a sense of security with back up and reserves. A time when you can respond to new ideas and find a footing upon which you can build a foundation. You may be gathering your resources, with the desire to catch and hold on to vital ideas or impulses you have experienced. Projects benefit from nurturing and growth. Maybe it’s time to reassess the relationships you have with the people in your local area.

Sagittarius: During this New Moon in your own sign you may feel more self-centred and concerned with appearances than usual. Friends and family unite to support you personally and financially. You may appear in a good light in a group or social gathering. This is a time to let go of all that is worn out and superficial. Turn away from the outer world, focusing now on personal and inner changes. New information captures your whole attention. Your mind and ideas may turn to questions of finance and material support. You could come up with new ideas relating to money, possessions and personal values.

Capricorn: Understanding and generosity may be forthcoming from friends or family during this New Moon. Your own efforts to be helpful and give of yourself are well rewarded. Put up with minor inconveniences and irritations for the sake of what is really important in your life. Sacrifices made now will be more than repaid by an increased ability on your part to make dreams real. In an understanding mood you are able to appreciate and value the humility that goes into any effort towards goals, which reach beyond the personal. You may generally feel more inclusive and want to create a harmonious environment by dissolving outworn barriers.

Aquarius: Community concerns and altruism in general, may get an added boost during this New Moon. People around you unite to make long-term goals and dreams seem more possible. This is a time for resolutions and attempting to put into practice your heartfelt dreams. You feel moved to cooperate and work together with others on community and long-term projects. You want to make your ideals a reality. Your business sense is enhanced, and you are able to really get down to what is important when it comes to making decisions affecting your material welfare. Superficial possessions may no longer interest you. Instead, things of lasting value appeal.

Pisces: There is a lot of support for you to make job-related and practical decisions. Your ambitions could receive encouragement from those around you. Your practical vision may be at a high, during which you can see what needs to be done and just how to go about doing it. Long term goals and projects may benefit from the increased clarity you possess. During this New Moon you become aware that a little self-sacrifice and an understanding attitude on your part could have far-reaching effects on your own life-path and general direction. A little long-suffering and restraint now could really pay off later.

Visiting restrictions in place at Bantry General Hospital due to Flu Presentations

Strict visitor restrictions have been put in place with immediate effect at Bantry General Hospital due to the number of patients who have presented with flu like symptoms.

In the interest of patient care and in order to restrict the spread of the flu virus within the hospital, it is necessary with immediate effect to ban all visitors to Bantry General Hospital, with the exception of following: critically ill patients are restricted to one visitor per critically ill patient and confined to visiting times only, and attendance at the Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) and Local Injury Unit (LIU) should only take place if absolutely necessary, only one relative per patient attending these areas.

The elderly, children, pregnant women or young adults, those with chronic illnesses or vulnerable others are advised not to visit. Outpatient, Day care services and routine hospital admissions are not affected.

All infection control measures are in place and every effort is being made to manage and contain the spread of the flu virus.

People with flu like symptoms are advised to contact their GP by phone in the first instance and avoid presenting at the Emergency Department at Bantry General Hospital.

Bantry hospital staff are asking people to think about all their care and treatment options and keep ED services for the patients who need them most. Others with a less serious illness can be treated by their GP or out of hours GP service where their GP can refer them to an Assessment Unit the following day if required.

The purpose of the meeting is to increase the cooperation between Gardai and the retail sector, ensuring that the current low levels of crime in the locality extends past the busy approaching Christmas season. The meeting will be addressed by the local Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Ian O’ Callaghan, who will discuss burglary prevention, shoplifting, fraud, and cybercrime. There will be a particular focus on cash handling and cash exposure of businesses in the run up to the Christmas shopping period.
