March is associated with the change of season. In the Northern hemisphere, regardless of the weather conditions, we can usually sense the energising effect of the Sun, as it reaches approaches the equinox position. Days become longer than nights from March 20. Other significant energy shifts may be felt this month, as the personal planets make crucial changes in their zodiac positions.

On March 1, Mars begins a retrograde phase, which lasts through to mid May. This red planet rules over our physical energy. He is assertive, dynamic and competitive. Travelling through the relationship oriented sign, Libra, our energy has been directed towards ‘us and them’ issues. Independent, feisty Mars is not very comfortable with kinship and co-operation, so relationship focus tends towards differences rather than common ground. In backwards motion this attention becomes reflective and inward looking. Conflict becomes very personal and we have to look within for the cause of any strife. This is not a time to blame others for the discord.

On March 2, Saturn also turns retrograde. Traditionally associated with limitations in the mundane world, he has a constraining and structuring effect. Whilst he’s slowed down to retrace his path, we have to re-examine the fundamental underpinning to the very substance of our lives. In the sign of Scorpio, Saturn’s focus is on identifying and transforming whatever has power or control over us. It may be habits, addictions to food, drugs, lifestyle, psychological patterns, desires, phobias, insecurities etc. or less personal powers like environment, government, cultural beliefs, religious doctrines or national policies. Saturn in Scorpio asks awkward questions about forbidden topics. Whilst Saturn is retrograde until mid July question what it is within you that dictates your response. Once identified, transform your reactions so they no longer have power over your choices.

On March 5, Venus moves from conservative Capricorn into autonomous Aquarius. Venus is a social planet and draws us into relationships of all kinds and inspires us to create works of beauty. She’s been in Capricorn since mid December and the emphasis has been on practicalities, commitment and resilience. Venus plays it safe in Capricorn and will endure hardships for the sake stability. Associations or creative pursuits that have stood the test of time will prove to be of lasting value. Now the energy shifts towards more future looking Aquarius. A strong desire for freedom in all social connections will be uppermost with social equality and fair play being vital. Common interests draw people together and platonic relationships are as important as physical bonds. Standing apart gives a sense of independence rather that isolation now. Selfish desires are not easily tolerated.

On March 6, the big planet Jupiter changed direction to start moving forward once more. Known as the greater benefic, Jupiter is exalted in its current sign of Cancer. Here the best of his nature is expressed. Jupiter increases the ‘feel good’ things in life, opens up new horizons and exerts a sense of trust and faith in life. Now he’s moving freely in a direct motion and we can expect a boost of positivity and opportunity. He is also moving closer into the difficult T square alignment with Pluto and Uranus. This puts us on alert in preparation for the forthcoming Cardinal Cross in April. The increase in tension can be felt, but this can be an excited anticipation as much as an anxious dread. With Jupiter in Cancer we can know what we truly need in our lives and we are given the opportunity to reach out and find it, whilst what we don’t need in our life becomes more apparent and we can simply let it go.

The next Full Moon is at 27° Virgo on March 16 at 5:09pm with the next New Moon at 10° Aries on March 30 at 7:46pm (UT+1)

Aries: This month's Full Moon finds you examining your responsibilities and basic security. Dealing with the mundane aspects of your daily routine will be more than repaid with an increased ability to make your dreams a reality later. Any effort on your part to improve your health, diet, and physical condition will pay off. Your practical sense is enhanced and you are able to make difficult decisions affecting your material welfare. Being of service to others or taking on extra responsibilities now will prove to have been an investment in your own future in the long run.

Taurus: You want to make your dreams a reality and this Full Moon is time for putting on a show. Any attempt to put into practice your hopes and ambitions will pay dividends. Your tendency to compromise and settle for less than you are capable of can be a problem. Tension results when you ignore your own desires for achievement or acknowledgement. This is a very creative phase so allow yourself time to be playful with any new ideas and inspiration you experience. You may then find that you're actually on course, full steam ahead, for getting to where you want to be.

Gemini: The Full Moon shines on your home and private life, which could be very rewarding now. Your feelings and sense of security may find you seeking seclusion for a time or losing yourself in past memories. Events make it difficult to reach clear decisions concerning career and life direction. However, it’s a good time to gather your resources around you so you can reach new levels. Circumstances may urge you on to make a greater effort. But don't overdo things or try to go too far too fast. Despite appearances things are working with, rather than against, you so don't get overwhelmed. Let things take their natural course.

Cancer: This Full Moon is the perfect time to act on any impulse to better your self. You may have plans to take up a course or make a journey. Even just mixing with people who are culturally different to you or exploring new ideas will prove worthwhile. A career opportunity or the chance to impress someone of importance is likely during this phase. Giving extra attention to details and keeping up with everyday business could be time consuming but you can make the small things add up to contribute to the larger plan. Feeling good about yourself and what you are doing with your time ensures you a sense of wellbeing.

Leo: This Full Moon is a time for getting down to business. It’s a good time to put the past behind you as you’re likely to be less sentimental during the next weeks. Keep moving onwards, concentrating on the important things. Strip away and discarding non-essential items, memories and old habits. The drive to improve your finances and material security is strong now and the desire for autonomy makes you reconsider areas of where dependence on others may no longer serve the original purpose. You could find some welcome inspiration for a new direction or opportunity you hadn't previously considered.

Virgo: A strong desire to express your unique personality could find you enjoying an extra busy social scene during the Full Moon phase. You want to assert yourself and take the lead but you may not always get full support from others, as you tend to create reverberation in those around you until later this month. You could be over-reacting to having given a lot of time and attention to your important relationships just lately. Your basic energy and drive are strong so if you can avoid being directly confrontational you will soon manage to charm even the most obstinate.

Libra: You’re sorting through the experiences of the last several months, in preparation for making a new start in some area of your life. This is a time of discrimination and possible self-examination. Living the ordinary life is not the whole story for you now. You want to contribute something worthwhile and you are happy to take on extra responsibilities to do this. The needed support will be offered by friends and co-workers if they see your true intention is to be helpful and give something of yourself. Taking care of your needs both spiritually and physically is a balancing act you want to achieve now.

Scorpio: Your thoughts may be on improving and making the best of a current situation and you can always bring an unexpected twist or insight to anything you set your mind to. Your recent creativity and increased sense of enjoyment is enhanced by a sincere appreciation coming from others. You can now reap rewards from past efforts, as there is strong support for your ambitions and goals. Remember though that not everyone is ready to make the required moves at the same time as you. Your vision is probably far reaching and others may not see the bigger picture exactly as you do.

Sagittarius: The inward focus and quiet time of the last few weeks is paying off now. A new energy directs you towards achieving something of value and puts you back in the full flow of life events. The Full Moon marks the end of an uncertain time. Now you can see what was holding you back. You're able to secure your position, know what the limits are, and move forward. You've created a solid base to build on so now decide how you can make it work to your benefit. Injured pride and misunderstandings are a result of people taking themselves too seriously, so try not to be one of them.

Capricorn: The coming Full Moon is the culmination of energies from the past two weeks so now you can push on toward whatever goals you have in mind. Whilst you have the right mood compelling you, it’s a good time to reach for something different and stimulating. You want to improve your position and are willing to take advice or seek extra knowledge. There maybe additional details, communications or travelling to attend to but keep your focus on the bigger picture. Backed up by so much strong energy you are likely to feel an incredible drive to accomplish and achieve in life.

Aquarius: This Full Moon you'll have the courage to do something quite liberating. Having considered what is worth keeping and what's just a drain on your resources you'll want to make some space in your life. You find yourself thinking about your needs in relationship to the others in your life as new impulses inspire you and send you off in new directions. Consider how much your physical needs and personal assets are tied up with others and ensure there is a balance there so no one feels overly indebted. This burst of freedom will do you good and make it easier to keep things in perspective.

Pisces: With the Sun in your sign and the Full Moon focus on your house of relationships it’s no surprise that you want to take a fresh look at your close associations. You’re inclined to let go of anything you believe to be holding you back or simply uninspiring. You may also be torn between neglecting individual or personal concerns in favour of more general social affairs. Doubts fade into the background as a new sense of self, a more assertive personal style and a more dynamic approach to life emerges now. Your relationships need to reflect this energy and those that don't may suffer.

Submarines, American Sailors, and the Underwater War in Irish Waters, 1917-1918
by Dr John Borgonovo in The Parish Centre, Clonakilty
on Thursday Oct 26 2017 at 8.30 pm

In 1917, unrestricted submarine warfare by German U-boats brought the United States into WWI and created a crisis in Britain. To defeat the submarine menace, an American naval fleet was dispatched to County Cork, bringing about 10,000 sailors with it. This talk will explain the circumstances of this extraordinary event, and how Cork residents dealt with their unexpected American guests.

Dr John Borgonovo is a lecturer in the School of History at UCC. His publications include Spies, Informers, and the 'Anti-Sinn Féin' Society: The Intelligence War in Cork City, 1920-1921; The Dynamics of War and Revolution: Cork City, 1916-1918; Exercising a close vigilance over their daughters: Cork women, American sailors, and Catholic vigilantes, 1917-18; Something in the Nature of a Massacre: The Bandon Valley Killings Revisited (with Andy Bielenberg). His latest publication (with co-authors John Crowley, Donal Ó Drisceoil and Mike Murphy) is the highly acclaimed and magnificient Atlas of the Irish Revolution. In July of this year, he organised a very successful conference on Winning the Western Approaches - Unrestricted Submarine Warfare and the US Navy in Ireland 1917-1918.

Dúchas Clonakilty's first lecture for the Autumn promises to be of huge interest to all: Emerging from the Shadow of Tom Crean – The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Thursday September 28th 8.30pm.

Lecture by Aileen Crean O’Brien & Bill Sheppard

In May 2016, Kerry man Tom Crean, along with Ernest Shackleton and four other crew members, landed the James Caird lifeboat on the rocky isle of South Georgia. The navigation of that small boat, across 1500 km through icy winds and towering seas, is regarded as the greatest ever feat of navigation. They then trekked across the forbidding and inhospitable mountains and glaciers of South Georgia to seek help for the rest of their crew, who were left behind on Elephant Island after their ship, the Endurance, was crushed by the Antarctic ice.

One hundred years later, Crean’s grandaughter, Aileen Crean O’Brien, set off with her sons and partner to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps. Join Aileen and Bill to hear of their adventures (and misadventures) on the Southern Ocean and the island of South Georgia.
