Surgeon Gavin O’Brien with theatre nurses at Bantry Hospital

A new outreach surgery service has just been launched in Bantry Hospital.

Headed by surgeon Gavin O’Brien, the goal is to provide a local day-case surgery (varicose veins, hernias, gallbladders etc) for the people of West Cork.

“Local people can avoid having to travel to Cork for day-case surgery. It also facilitates the reduction of waiting lists in the city hospitals,” says Gavin.

Bantry Hospital management has invested significantly to ensure the most modern equipment and techniques are available for patients. Varicose vein surgery is performed using the Venefit Radiofrequency Ablation technique — a minimally-invasive endovenous procedure performed through a single needle-hole, designed to radically reduce post-operative pain and bruising with much faster recovery compared with traditional vein surgery.

At present, referrals have to be made through the Mercy Hospital in Cork.
