April 23 is the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s birth and CLON-UPON-AVON, the first Clonakilty Shakespeare Festival, will take place from April 23 to 27 to mark the occasion.

The festival’s website www.clonuponavon.com will become live in the next few days; check it out to find the latest news and the official programme.

Everybody involved, from organisers to performers, are extremely excited about the programme of unusual events, which include a night for people to gather and quote their favourite lines, a concert of renaissance music, open air theatre and much more.

Venues throughout the town will host events including the Park Cinema, the Venue, An Teach Beag, the library and all of the town’s churches. Three local cafés will host ‘Breakfast at William’s’, a lovely project that allows customers to order their coffee together with verses from Shakespeare’s works, delivered by an actor on-site.

Events are either free or for a nominal fee, much of which will go to charity so make room in your diary this month for some Shakespearean shananigans.
