The apple of Skibbereen’s eye

Friends Liz Crowley and Celine Jackson are celebrating the tenth birthday of their Skibbereen café Apple Betty’s this year. The towncentre eatery opened in October 2008, just one month before a recession was officially declared. “That we not only survived but thrived is testament to what we offer and the hard work of all our staff,” says Liz. “It’s also a testament to how Skibbereen has become such a vibrant town. The opening of tech companies like Spearline and all those in Ludgate have brought employment and new people in; their custom has helped us enormously.”

“We are living in the ‘Riviera’ of Ireland,” Celine explains. “It’s a great place to live and work, and new people moving to the area have brought fantastic diversity. Everybody, from locals to visitors, enjoy eating something with great flavour that is made with quality ingredients, and I think we offer them that here.”

Celine and Liz have updated the interior of Apple Betty’s several times over the years to make sure it is always fresh and welcoming with a cheerful atmosphere.

While it might look deceptively small from the street, there is actually tons of tiered seating inside and Apple Betty’s is a real meeting spot for Skibbereen, whether for school mums grabbing a coffee and chat in the morning, workers on their lunchbreak, or retirees enjoying an afternoon cake. There are also plenty of tables on the square outside to enjoy any sunshine and watch the world go by.

The all day menu (until 5pm) and daily specials at Apple Betty’s offer great variety. Nobody is forgotten with vegetarian, low fat, fat free, dairy free, egg free and coeliac friendly options; the salads, sandwiches, paninis and wraps allow you to choose exactly what you like and require.

Apple Betty’s bake all their own cakes and soda bread whilst soups, quiches, lasagnes, meatballs, lunch specials and fresh salads are all freshly prepared inhouse. Baltimore Free Range Eggs and local beef are used.

Breakfast is served from 9am to 11.30 and includes a filling full Irish or vegetarian option or try their French toast with bacon and maple syrup. There’s also every version of egg available from scrambled to omelet. Coffee is from local supplier Java Coffee and there’s also a range of speciality teas and herbal infusions. Soya milk is available as a non-dairy alternative.

Homebaking is the big draw for anybody with a sweet tooth. Apple Betty’s traditional apple pie is the bestseller but there’s a huge selection to choose from. Coeliac friendly options are supplied by a local specialty baker in a gluten-free kitchen.

If you haven’t been before, stop at Apple Betty’s next time you are in Skibbereen (you’ll see the café on the square at the Post Office traffic lights) where Liz and Celine, along with their staff Maeve, Kristina and Kirsty, offer a delicious meal and a warm welcome.
