Hidden amid the vast and varied schedule that spans the entirety of 2016’s A Taste of West Cork Food Festival, is an intriguing, ingenious and infectiously fun event that will not only entertain the masses, but also plant the seed of knowledge surrounding community development and food activism.

The Incredible Edible movement, which was founded in Todmorden, England in 2007, was established by a group of like-minded people whose ambition it was to promote community resilience and togetherness through the planting of edibles in available public spaces. Word of the movement quickly spread and it has now developed into a global network – with West Cork also claiming its rightful place on the members’ list! Brought to the region by the West Cork Garden Trail, the Incredible Edible Talk and Bicycle Buffet are just two of the events on the A Taste of West Cork Food Festival calendar that are not to be missed.

Mary Clear, founder of the movement, will hold the Incredible Edible Talk at St Patrick’s National School, Skibbereen on Saturday, September 10 at 11am. The free event will be used to promote this wonderful project, by encouraging festival goers both young and old to plant something edible – whether it be in a pot, plot, grass verge or window box – in an attempt to transform the towns and villages of West Cork, while having a lot of fun along the way! Aside from the informative talk, guests can also partake in a tour around the school’s impressive and award-winning new garden, during which they can visit the Geodome, willow tunnel, amphitheatre and insect hotel, among other weird and wonderful attractions.

Another quirky and unique event hosted as part of the Incredible Edible portion of A Taste of West Cork Food Festival, is the Incredible Edible Bicycle Buffet, which will kick off at Russagh Mills in Skibbereen at 5.15pm on Thursday, September 15. Participants will be invited on an educational bike ride around Skibbereen as they get a first-hand glimpse at the wonderful produce grown throughout West Cork. Following this, guests will be allowed to sample a delicious range of food and drinks, created using fresh produce grown by members of West Cork’s very own Incredible Edible initiative. The Riverside Café, the West Cork Hotel and Russagh Mills will provide the setting for this unforgettable dining experience. Tickets for this event are priced at €20 and booking is essential.
