Peugeot Ireland’s managing director Des Cannon says the French company’s aim is to ‘continue to move their brand upmarket.’ The brand with the famous Lion logo made a good start to the year by launching a new version of the 508 and for the first time in Ireland they also introduced their new 108 city car.
The revamped 508 comes with a few new touches and enhancements and Peugeot’s marketing people say that it compares very well in terms of price and spec with what they see as their main rivals in this sector, the VW Passat and Ford Mondeo.
Peugeot’s Irish marketing manager Emma Toner says their key message is that the 508 has so many extras that it can truly be described as ‘affordable quality.’
The 508 is a previous winner of the Irish Family Car of the Year and although the competition in this sector is formidable, the 508 should help Peugeot grow their share of the Irish market. The new 508 comes with LED lighting and a new seven-inch colour display in the dash.
At launch earlier this year, I drove the regular 508 from Dublin to Galway, but last week I had the SW or estate version. We keep being told that Irish people don’t really buy many estates, but this is the third week that I have had an estate: Mondeo, Seat X-Perience and now the 508 SW.
I read recently that black has replaced silver as Irish drivers’ favourite colour. But I thought silver suited this long 508 and it really looked the part, sleek and very long. You will appreciate the reversing cameras. Naturally the boot is massive and underneath is that cherished spare wheel. A spare wheel yes, but an electric handbrake, which wouldn’t fill you with confidence. I would prefer the old-fashioned type hand brake.
Prices start at €26,750 and as with all cars from the Peugeot stable, it comes in three trims levels: Access, Active and Allure. It’s available in 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines. The SW version starts at €29,290, while the highly speced 1.6 Allure version of the SW I drove will cost you €31,495. You get a five-year warranty and road tax is only €190. PCP is certainly the buzz word in Irish motoring right now and you can get the 508 for €270 per month. Peugeot currently has a €3,500 scrappage allowance.
It truly is a fine comfortable car to travel in, but the competition is stiff with the Mondeo and Passat dominating. However, if you are not a fan of those two brands, the 508, with a very frugal engine, certainly has an awful lot to offer and is definitely worth a test drive.
The only small complaint I had from my regular front seat passenger was that the cubbyholes around the gear stick were a bit shallow. But there is nothing ‘shallow’ about the 508 and if it’s cup holders you want, two pop out from the dash. I also liked the way the wing mirrors folded in when the central locking was applied, very useful in such a large car.
