The recent 5K in Ballinascarthy, in aid of the West Cork Rapid Response “Jeep for Jason”, was a great success with over 300 people taking part. Participants were extremely generous so it was a very positive start to the fundraising campaign.

The walk was kicked off by International sprinter Phil Healy from Bandon AC. Also in attendance on the day were Ken Perrot and Ellen Coughlan from C103 Street Fleet and Cork County Mayor Alan Coleman.

First man home was local participant Tom Crowley from Castleview; and what a performance it was, considering he had run the 10K in Kinsale just before coming to Ballinascarthy that day. The first woman home was Liz Coomey from Ahiohill and the first underage home was Andrew O’Leary from Gurteenomahon, Bandon. Congratulations and well done to all who participated and to everyone who helped on the day.

Ballinascarthy Community Association, who are spear-heading the fundraising for the new jeep have lots of events lined up including a “uniform-free day” in every national and secondary school in West Cork on September 5, a coffee day in Mary and Gerard Peppards, Western Rd. Clonakilty on September 6 from 11am, bag packing in Dunnes Stores, Clonakilty on Friday September 12, a social dance in Ballinascarthy Hall with Finbarr Dennehy on Friday September 12, a Vintage Threshing day in Ring on Sunday September 14, a whist drive in Ballinascarthy Hall on Friday September 19, an event by Bob Patterson, Ballinascarriga on Saturday September 27 and finally another coffee day in Siobhán Harte’s, Clonakilty on Sunday September 28.

On Wednesday September 10, during a coffee day at Bandon Motors (from 11am), Bob Clarke will hand over the keys to the new jeep to the Ballinascarthy Community Association. The jeep will then go to be kitted out for the West Cork Rapid Response.

Fundraising activities continue into October, when there will be a presentation of the jeep to Dr. Jason. If anyone else, from anywhere in West Cork, would like to contribute to our fundraising by organising an event, please contact Betty at (087) 2414787 or Kate at (086) 4540981
